March 18, 10 am - 6 pm On March 18, 2006, Northwest VEG will hold its Second Annual VegFest: A Compassionate Living Fair. The event will inspire and educate, with an emphasis on the impact of our food choices. Whether you’ve just begun to learn about social issues, or you’ve been making positive changes in your life for years, VegFest will provide information and resources to help you take further steps toward a more compassionate, earth-friendly lifestyle. There will be fantastic speakers, fabulous chef demonstrations, free vegan food samples to enjoy, information from local nonprofits, literature and resource ideas, and activities for children. The event is sponsored by In Defense of Animals, First Unitarian Church's Community for Earth group, Natural Awakenings Magazine, Blossoming Lotus - Vegan World Fusion Cuisine and VegNews Magazine. Numerous businesses and nonprofits will be there to exhibit their products and services. SPEAKERS include Howard Lyman, 4th generation cattle rancher turned vegan educator. Howard is the author of Mad Cowboy: Plain Truth from the Cattle Rancher Who Won't Eat Meat and No More Bull; check out Howard at www.madcowboy.com. Another not-to-miss speaker is George Eisman, R.D., one of the nation's foremost educators on vegetarian nutrition. Farm Sanctuary's Veg for Life campaign brings George to Portland. Another not-to-miss speaker is Bo Rinaldi, owner of Blossoming Lotus and co-author of Vegan World Fusion Cuisine, VegNews' Cookbook of the Year in 2005. Kendra Kimbirauskas, formerly of The Sierra Club, will speak on environmental issues pertaining to factory farming. CHEF DEMONSTRATIONS include Stuart Reiter of Blossoming Lotus, a vegan café in Portland's Pearl District: www.blossominglotus.com. Chef Al of the Institute for Culinary Awakening also will demonstrate: www.chefal.org. Julie Hasson, author of several baking books, will share secrets sure to satisfy, including those who enjoy chocolate: www.juliehasson.com. Seattle chef David Lee, founder of Field Roast Grain Meat Co., will also offer a demonstration: www.fieldroast.com. In addition, Pete Prasarttongosoth, owner of Vege Thai (3274 SE Hawthorne, Portland), will present a vegan Thai cooking demonstration.
