Plant-based powerhouses to speak at VegFest
Marsha Rakestraw, NW VEG vice president
This year's Portland VegFest features three speakers who rock the world of healthful living: Dr. John McDougall, Kathy Freston, and Rip Esselstyn.
"I'm the luckiest doctor in the world, because my patients get well. Other doctors give people pills; I'm the doctor who takes them off drugs."
-Dr. John McDougall
Our keynote speaker is John McDougall, M.D., a board-certified internist and nutrition expert who is renowned for his residential nutrition program focused on a healthy plant-based diet and lifestyle changes.
Dr. McDougall has been speaking for more than three decades about plant-based health and the impact of our food choices on disease.
|
|
McDougall has heralded his program as not only a great strategy for maintaining a healthy weight and
lifestyle, but also as an important tool in the reversal of serious illnesses, such as heart disease and
diabetes. McDougall grew up eating the Standard American Diet (SAD). Even a stroke at age 18 and a
cholesterol level of 338 mg/dL at age 22 didn't spur him to change his eating habits. It wasn't until he
moved to Hawaii to begin practicing medicine that McDougall became cognizant of the connection between diet and health.
